How to start your own Blog without needing a Web Designer

Are you thinking for a while now that a blog would be something you would love to create and keep updated? Blogs are great ways to share pieces of useful information, opinions, practically anything that might be interesting for your readers. It can even turn into a way to earn some money, but let us start with the beginning. Making a blog is not that complicated, if you know the basic steps that need to be covered. Just like most people that start in the online environment, you may be low on funds, so hiring a web designer may be quite tricky for you. Depending on their skills and experience, web designers can get quite expensive. But, you should know that you don’t need them, being able to create the blog you want on your own. Here is what you need to know about this process, so you can make it happen.

1. Choose your platform If you are not a mastermind coder and do not know how to start a blog from scratch, you should decide upon a platform that will offer the base for your blog. WordPress and Blogger are probably the most known and traditional platforms for blogging. I think Wordpress is more difficult to set up if you have no experience with hosting etc. But you can also opt for Tumblr (brilliant if you want to blog from your phone or iPad, which is what I love), Ghost, LiveJournal, Svbtle, or Medium. And guess what? All of them are free. Yes, using them costs you nothing when it comes to creating, designing, and putting together a functional blog. If you are wondering which one is the favorite of most bloggers who start out without a budget, you should know that WordPress is by far the most used one. It offers a great degree of customization for your blog, considering that you won’t pay a penny for using it. You will however have to pay for hosting it. Tumbler and Blogger are free to have and free to host.

2. Try to stick to a simple design It may be tempting to go a bit overboard, especially when so many ideas for your design come in. But, do try to remember that a simple design will always be more appreciated. Everybody today loves a site with a clean appearance, tasteful but simple design, which is easy to navigate. So don’t complicate things using designs that are too intricate, because you will be surprised in an unpleasant way, by the unpopularity of your blog. Do not use the entire rainbow of colors to create your design, or an army of fonts. It is recommended not to use more than three colors and three fonts. Use one font for the title, one for the subheading, and one for the content, if you want.

3. Contrasting colors can do more Since we agreed that you don’t have to use a lot of colors, if you want to create a visual impact, you should use contrasting colors. Just see what fits your design best. You should have a primary color, a shade of grey, and perhaps a color for your call to action. But, as well, don’t be afraid of having white spaces. If they appear in your blog, it doesn’t mean that you have to fill them. They will give your blog that airy feeling, of a space that is not cramped. Exploit each version and see which one fits best, as long as you keep it nice and simple.

4. Resources that provide free images S Since you didn’t spend any money on the platform for your blog, why should you pay for the images that you will use on your blog? Of course, if you have pictures taken by you that you want to add, do feel free to do so. But, if you need other pictures, there are some places you can find them entirely free. StockSnap.io, Unsplash, Gratisography, Negative Space, Splitshire, and more, are all websites that offer free stock photos for anyone to use. So feel free to look for what you need here and don’t forget to check them out periodically, as new photos are uploaded in a constant basis.

5. Keep the design close to your goal For instance, if you start a blog about DIY projects around the house, you won’t use a design that includes flowers, unless you are talking about gardening DIY projects. The point is to make the design in such a manner that will help you touch your goal. Whether you are looking to make more people sign-up to your blog, to increase your sales number, or generate more enquiries, the design should help you on this task. You need to know clearly the subject of your blog, what makes it so unique among other, and what type of audience you are targeting. The answers to these questions will help you create the right design for your blog. Also, don’t forget about the call-to-action, which means that you should have headlines written in bold letter, arrows, prominent buttons, or any design detail that will grab the attention of the reader.

6. Don’t forget about the elementary aspects Now that you are finally working on your blog, you may like to be as creative as possible. Well, there is nothing bad about this, just don’t forget to include some of the most important parts of a blog in your design. These are headers, sidebars, options for subscription, search bars, and author attribution. They aren’t necessarily intended to make your blog look better, but their certainly improve its functionality. They will all allow your visitors to enjoy their time on the blog, by navigating easily around its pages and information.

So you see, it is not an impossible mission to create a blog, even without the help of a web designer. Don’t be afraid to start this journey, because you have all the tools you need online and for free. And don’t forget to experiment until you are satisfied with the result.
